Jamaica

If Jamaica were a religion, "no problem" would be the ritual chant, jerk chicken would be manna and views of the lush, green mountains would replace stained glass. Baptisms would take place in a cool stream below a waterfall, and Red Stripe beer would serve as holy water. That pretty much sums up the spiritual side of island life.

Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean. Swimming, sunning, snorkeling, diving, partying, horseback riding, beaches, mountains, world-class resorts, river rafting, hiking, tennis, golf, polo, reggae, fishing, great food, caves, beautiful scenery and historical sites are Jamaica's foremost attractions. Travelers who appreciate water, scenery, food, music and dance will enjoy Jamaica. But the island is not for those interested in immaculate surroundings. Poverty is widespread and highly visible.

Things to do and see in Jamaica:

  • Blue Mountains: famous for its namesake coffee, one of the highest continuous mountain ranges in the Caribbean. Hikers and mountain bikers will want to tackle the Blue Mountain Peak at 4000 feet above sea level.

  • Cockpit Country: region characterized by a weird formation of limestone hummocks and sinkholes. Only accessible from the outer fringes, best if seen from the air.

  • Falmonth: former sugar port now a small oceanside market village. Attractions include its Victorian market, parish church (built in 1796), and Seaboard Street (great for the anglers).

  • Kingston: attractions include the Devon House (restored home and showplace of local arts and crafts), Hope Botanical Gardens, National Gallery of Arts and the Kingston crafts market (wide range of straw and wood items).

  • Montego Bay: resort area great for restaurants, nightlife, shopping and leisure activities. Visit the Cage (slave jail), and Rocklands Feeding Station where hummingbirds eat right out of your hand.

  • Negril: best and least crowded of the beach areas. White sand beaches stretch for 5 miles along Long Bay and for 2 miles along Bloody Bay. Great place for sunbathing, swimming and spectacular sunsets. Great place for the whole family with areas to dive and snorkel.

  • Ocho Rios: major port of call for cruise ships. It offers the island's best shopping and a variety of nightlife. Visit Dunn River Falls and climb 600 feet of waterfalls.

These are just a few of the many highlights and attractions that await you on the island of Jamaica. Please consult your local travel agent for any additional information or packages going to this wonderful island in the Caribbean.
