Cruising 101
Take a two-day cruise to nowhere or a two-month
'round-the-world cruise to everywhere. Travel on a small eight to ten-passenger sailboat
or sail in style on a luxury line that accommodates 2600 passengers. The options are
almost as limitless as the imagination and there is one for every interest.
Cruising is a great way to enjoy the most exotic ports of call in the world. Visit such
exotic and interesting places as the U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados,
Mexico, Central and South America, the Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii and Europe. These
destinations only skim the surface of the many places cruise ships can take you.
Cruising is for the land-lover as well as the sea-lover. You don't have to spend the
entire trip on the boat. There will be stops at ports along the way. During stops, you can
spend as much or as little time on the boat as you want. Daily excursions into ports of
call are a great way to experience other cultures on different islands and shop bazaars
for souvenirs, all within a relatively short period of time.
Three and four-day cruises allow visits to the Bahamas, Key West, Grand Caymans and
Mexico. Cruises of a week or longer provide time for Caribbean island adventures,
summertime excursions to Alaska and the Yukon Territories, or, for the romantics in all of
us, Mediterranean cruises to Italy and Greece.
Cruising is a no-nonsense way to see the world. Little documentation is needed compared to
other trips abroad. Most U.S. ports of departure require only a picture ID and a certified
copy of your birth certificate (a passport would serve the same purpose).
For the best cruise bargains, travel during the month of May, or from September through
Thanksgiving. Anytime you plan a cruise and want the best deal available, begin getting
prices at least 120 days in advance of your sailing departure date. Cruise companies offer
discounts if you book the cruise some or many months in advance. If you are trying to plan
a cruise around a major holiday, allow an extra couple of months advance notice so you can
get the best deal available.
Cruises are great fun for individuals and families, and they can be an affordable way to
see the world. Consult your local travel agent for the most up-to-date cruise information.
