Painting on Stained Glass and Clay
For
an easy, do-it-yourself, great gift idea or just to pass the time, I recommend painting. My two favorite painting crafts
are stained glass and clay moldings.
Stained glass is elegant and easy to do.
It can be found in the craft and hobby section of almost any department store. It is inexpensive and lots of
fun. You can find packages
of paints and stained glass ornaments or buy them separately. The paint sets come in all
assorted mixtures. Some
have glitter in the paint; others may come in pastel or regular colors. Whatever paint set you buy,
make sure it is a transparent type of paint because when working with stained glass you
want to be able to see through the colored glass fairly well. Remember to keep your brush
clean and to keep the cap on the paint closed so that they will last a long time.
Painting clay moldings is also fun and inexpensive. Clay moldings require a little
more detail and patience. The
moldings can be found in all shapes and sizes--everything from cute little garden insects
to fairly large Victorian House models.
Also, a different paint is required than is used for stained glass. Just be sure to look carefully
at the package of paint before purchasing since the paint for stained glass and clay or
ceramic can be found in the same section. A number of various sized
brushes can be used, but for scrupulous detailing I recommend a toothpick. They are great for getting into
small crevices where even the smallest brush may fail. And you cant beat the
price!
Many of these crafts are foolproof, but I would still recommend wearing an old T-shirt and
keeping lots of paper towels around.
I find that it is best to work in an area that is easily accessible (but out of the
reach of small children and/or animals) and to keep a towel under the work at all
times.
Take a minute to
stop by your local hobby/craft shop and pick up a few projects to work on in your spare
time. They make for great gifts for birthdays
and holidays not to mention the fact that they are a fun. Many craft projects are suitable
for children and a creative way for family and friends to spend time together.
