Strength Camp
An Interesting Story

The first day of Strength Camp 2003 began with nervous anticipation. Terrified faces line the room. These young men and women have heard horror stories from past participants of the grueling regimen that awaits them. Only the few who attended the camp last year know what to expect and they do little to calm the fears of the newcomers. Instead, they talk of workouts so exhausting and intense they were nauseating. By the end of the first hour, however, everyone is too tired to be scared anymore. And another year's strength camp is underway.

Strength Camp is a six-week intensive program designed to get athletes in better shape in a short period of time. Held the first week of June 2003 through mid July 2003, the camp met each Monday thru Friday from 6:00a.m. till 9 a.m. and from 9:00a.m. till 12:00 p.m.

It combines various elements for improving fitness, including plyometrics, agility drills, weight training and cardiovascular conditioning. Each activity has a specific function aimed at making the athlete faster, quicker or stronger.

The hard work does pays off. Strength Camp can be the key to giving teams a competitive edge over their opponents. Since participating in Strength Camp the past few years, for example, the Wallace State Girls Volleyball teams have routinely outperformed their opponents during regular season and have even gone on to win state championships.

Now in its 14th  year, the camp is open anyone 14 years or older and is sponsored each summer by sponsored by Sportsfirst in Cullman. Steve Johnson, a longtime trainer and former Wallace State Strength and Conditioning Coach, is the instructor, as he has been every year since the camp's inception.

Strength Camp will get you into the best shape of your life. It requires dedication, determination and drive, but the rewards of completing the camp are priceless. If you missed the camp this year, check with the Civic Center early next summer for the dates of next year's class.

This year is going to be the biggest class ever.  Even middle aged people are invited.

See you there!

Steve Johnson
