Fashion Trends for Fall and
the New Millennium

By all accounts fashion for the coming fall and the start of the new millennium will be a mixture of many styles. It is impossible to name a single theme or even several themes. You can have many styles in the coming season-- sophisticated, natural, sporty, feminine or futuristic.  It’s a season to wear the things you like best and the things you feel most comfortable in. Take advantage of this opportunity to truly have fun with clothes.

Designers continue to cater to comfort and practicality but there is also and imaginative and futuristic air. The minimalism made famous by Calvin Klein continues, but it does not take center stage.  There is an abundance of texture, color and complex design. Colors run the gamut from bright palates to the more subtle earth tones.

T-shirts and luxury fabrics are popular. There are many instances of traditional items revamped in unconventional fabrics--a lightweight knit sable poncho, for example. Oversize wraps, including ponchos, serapes and blankets are very popular and are an excellent addition to a wardrobe as they can serve as a winter coat. In addition to interesting use of fabric, some wraps and other pieces have ethnic overtones, also part of the variety of the new season.

Both long skirts and mini skirts are trendy as well as pants of all varieties. Drawstring pants continue to be especially popular. The focus on both fitness and comfort continues to keep sportswear at the forefront.  The healthy, active look has widespread appeal, so many fabrics in sportswear this season are non-traditional and not designed for exercise.  Leather jackets, shiny blouses and camisoles and trousers of almost any length may all be found in sportswear collections as well as a variety of textures such as cashmere, mohair and lace.

Enjoy the upcoming season as one of the few chances in fashion when you can wear almost anything you like and still be in style. Forget rules. Experiment. Be any style you want, but don’t be the same everyday.  Try some of the more futuristic styles and don't miss out on the once in a lifetime opportunity to dress for a new millennium.
