The caverns was the first recorded cave in the U.S. (1796) and has a colorful history including its use by indians as a burial gounds and refuge, by the Confederate Army during the Civil War, by onyx miners, for the illegal production and sale of liquor during Prohibition, for exploration, and as a "Show Cave."
