Cullman County Museum
Description
Experience the Unique
Heritage of Cullman County: The Cullman County Museum is located in a replica of
the original home of Col. John G. Cullman, founder of the city and county. It features
eight rooms on the main floor filled with thousands of items related to the city's
history.
The Archaeological Room begins the Museum tour with displays of Indian artifacts hundreds
of years old. The centerpiece here is a 7-foot tall carving of an Indian warrior from a
sweet gum tree. There are many arrowheads and other Indian collectibles in the room.
The Primitive Room carries the visitor into an era of turn-of-the-century tools used to
carve a living out of the hilly landscape of Cullman County. Weather worn wooden rafters
and walls taken from area barns include plows, lanterns, planes, household items, and
other features of daily pioneer life.
The Clothing Store allows window shopping for outfits from the 1850's. It contains a
several wedding gowns, and other fashions from the late 1800's.
Main Street brings to life the variety of shops found on Main Street Cullman over a
hundred years ago. A family stroll down the brick street provides a look at the Hobby
Shop, Dry Goods Store, Drug Store, Doctor's Office, General Store, Jewelry Store, and Gun
Shop. Between the store fronts are a wishing well, original school bell and a beer wagon
replica stacked high with scrapbooks on Cullman life.
Just off Main Street, a child's room brings back memories of china dolls, wicker baby
carriages, wooden blocks and child size furniture made locally.
The South Room or Wall of Pictures, has a studio setting from
the time of fainting sofas, grand pianos, and love seats. A photographic history of
Cullman County is displayed along the walkway.
The highlight of the Museum Tour is the recreation of Col. John Cullman's room. Col.
Cullman's own rocking chair, bed, sofa, and other items from this founding father's life
are on display.
Museum History: Col. John G. Cullman, a German refugee,
fulfilled a life long dream of establishing a colony for his countrymen in the young
nation of America in the early 1870's. The Cullman County Museum is a replica of Col.
Cullman's home that was destroyed by fire in 1912. The Museum opened in 1973 during
Cullman's Centennial and has been collecting and preserving items from the cities unique
