Huntsville Botanical Garden
Description
The Huntsville Botanical Garden is one of
northern Alabama's best kept secrets. This exquisite young garden includes inviting
woodland paths, broad grassy meadows and stunning floral collections. Paths meander
through the shady woodlands of the Dogwood Trail and wildflowers quietly populate the
Nature Trail. Rose, daylily, herb, and butterfly gardens rival or surpass those of older,
more mature botanical gardens.
Maple trees line a promenade that encircles a glistening reflecting pool. The lush fern
glade and the demonstration vegetable garden are provided contain informational labels to
enhance the visitor's knowledge and appreciation of botanical treasures. The 5-acre
Central Corridor Gardens, featuring aquatic, perennial, and annual displays, are ablaze
with color from early spring through fall.
Rediscover the beauty of the butterfly at the Butterfly House, a 1999 addition to the
Garden that is now open to the public. The Butterfly House is home to many beautiful and
unique butterflies, including the Painted Lady, Tiger Swallowtail, Luna Moth, Sachem
Skipper, Comma, Viceroy, Black Swallowtail, Orange Sulfur, Monarch, Zebra Longwing,
Malachite.
The Garden's Center for Biospheric Education and Research is an excellent resource for all
ages. It houses a number of exhibits dealing with the "thin layer of life" on
Earth in which all things live -the biosphere. The Center presents the critical role of
plants in making this layer "livable" in a variety of ways. When humans venture
into space for long periods of time, they must recreate this biosphere we take for
granted. A "Lunar Greenhouse" illustrates the role that plants may have in
future space stations. |
