Worthless Check Unit

The Cullman County District Attorney's Worthless Check Unit was established in 1987 at the urging of several area business leaders. These leaders knew that Cullman businesses were spending too much time in the courtroom trying to recover their money from bad check writers. Since its formation, the Check Unit has recovered over one million dollars in restitution and service fees and returned this to area businesses. Court records also reflect that the Check Unit has reduced courtroom appearances by worthless check victims by as much as 80 percent.

In 1997, the Check Unit issued 3,360 warrants for bad check writers operating in Cullman County. During that year, the Unit collected and distributed $264,622.79 in restitution and service charges to victims of worthless checks. It also averaged 75 arrests per month of defendents who were subsequently prosecuted and ordered to pay restitution through the courts.
