Len Brooks
District Attorney

"I have a lot of pride in the fact that Cullman County is the best county in the State of Alabama! It is a great place to live and raise your children. It is a county and a community that is based upon strong Christian principles and moral values. I will do everything within my office's authority to insure that we maintain those morals and values as we continue to grow into the next century. It is indeed an honor to serve the people of Cullman County."

Brooks began his career in public service in 1975 as a Cullman County Juvenile Probation Officer, where he served for three years. He then became a Deputy Sheriff with the Cullman County Sheriff's Department. He served there for four years before being appointed to the position of Assistant District Attorney in 1981. He held this position for five years before being elected District Attorney in 1986. After a successful first term in office, he was re-elected as Cullman County District Attorney in 1992 and is currently serving his second term.

Since taking office in January of 1987, District Attorney Brooks has greatly expanded the services of the District Attorney's Office in several major areas. The Special Services Division, which contains the Worthless Check Unit, was created in May of 1987. Since its inception this Unit has collected and returned more than $3 million in restitution to victims of worthless checks. Victims Rights has been another major priority for Brooks. The Victim Service Unit of the District Attorney's office has collected in excess of $3,800,000 in restitution for victims of crimes in Cullman County during Brook's tenure.

District Attorney Brooks is an advocate of victim's rights. One of his main goals after taking office in 1987 was the formation of a domestic violence program for Cullman County. This goal became a reality in 1990 when "Harbor Haus", a shelter for victims of domestic and family violence, was opened. During his second term in office, another of his major goals became a reality when the Children's Advocacy Center of Cullman opened its doors in the fall of 1997.

During his tenure as Cullman County District Attorney, Len Brooks has been recognized statewide for his ability as a prosecutor. He was presented the John Hulett award by the Alabama District Attorney's Association. This award is given to the individual who has contributed the most to the prosecution of deadbeat dads and collection of delinquent child support in the State of Alabama. He was also presented the B.J. Stone award by the Alabama Association of Arson Investigators for his contributions regarding the prosecution of crimes involving arson. In July of 1993, Brooks was presented the District Attorney of the Year award by the Alabama District Attorney's Investigators Association. He has served as President of the Alabama Child Support Association, in addition to serving two terms on the Executive Committee of the Alabama District Attorneys Association. Len is the immediate past president of the Alabama Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators, and is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Arson Prevention Task force.

Len is married to the former June Sapp of Cullman and they have three boys: Lee, who is an attorney practicing in Jasper, Alabama; Brad, who is a sophomore at Wallace State College; and Josh, who is a senior at Cullman High School.
