Learn About Bariatric Surgery
What is Bariatric Surgery?
Who is Bariatric Surgery for? Morbidly obese patients who are 100 pounds overweight or
have a
BMI of 35 or greater with co morbid factors or a BMI of 40.
What are co morbid factors? Conditions that contribute to the mortality of obesity
A large group of our population views overweight people as weak willed, lazy individuals.
I have people from our support group that say that after their surgery, they start to lose
weight, and people find out they have had the surgery.
Their "friends" say they cheated or took the easy way out. This is not true...
these people are taking a big step towards being healthy that carries risks, and many
life-style changes. This change is far from the easy way out.
Frequent questions:
What is Dumping Syndrome?
When you talk about malabsorption what do you mean?
Will this also help with the sleep apnea?
What are some of the side effects of the surgery?
Is the surgery dangerous?
How is the procedure done?
How much will I be able to eat after surgery?
How quickly will you be able to lose weight?
Will insurance pay for this surgery?
The most important thing to learn from this is that Gastric Bypass is a learning tool to
teachyou how to eat properly and help you lose weight quickly. You can defeat this surgery
over time.
Make no mistake, this will change your life forever. Not just by changing your size, but
your diet will change- your outlook on life-how others look at you- elationships- with
others and with food...
It is very important to belong to a support group.
We have had a support group for about a year now....Expectations.... Virginia Ray began
this after having the surgery, and wanted to help others who were going through some of
the same things. She continues to head up our support group.
We meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the Woodland POB conference room from 4:30-6:30 pm.
Our support group is for people who want to learn more about the surgery, people who are
scheduled with doctors for their surgery, those whom have had the surgery already, or
people who need a support group for weight loss.
I could talk about this for a long time....
There are people out there that know much more about this surgery than I do...Going
through the surgery yourself makes a big difference.
I come from a labor and delivery background... It is similar in a way that you have an
expected outcome.... you will all lose weight just as in every delivery you will have a
baby... both usually take a similar course.... but every body is different.... everyone
will have a different experience.
Some people don't even know they have had the surgery... some people are sore...
Some people dont have an appetite for a long time... some can eat right away..... some can
eat dairy, some cant.
When people come to Woodland to have this surgery, I will be with them and their family
for support. I will go back with them, and help surgery keep the family informed. I will
be seeing them when they are in the hospital.... Helping them get used to the changes that
will be going on.
I would love for you to call and make an appointment to see me if you are interested in
having this surgery.
I can give you information about the doctors in town that are performing it, give you some
web-sites that are very informational, answer any questions you may have...and get you an
appointment scheduled. (256) 736-1101
